Day 177: Around My Town – The Treaty Oak

I was out and about this morning, trying desperately to get sunrise photos in between thunder showers and decided to walk down the road a few blocks to see the Treaty Oak.

I was born in the Jacksonville area, and have lived here a good majority of my life, but I had never seen the giant oak tree that was rescued from a sad ending by a journalist who wrote about it in the local newspaper, bringing it to the attention of philanthropist, Jessie Ball duPont.

It is estimated that the tree is over 250 years old and it is huge!  My photos truly do not do it justice, next time I will make sure to get a photo that includes a person, so you can see the incredible height and girth of this special oak.
